ANNUAL VENTURE SMITH DAY
|Date:||September 15, 2012|
|Time:||1:00 PM - 4:00 PM|
The 16th Annual Venture Smith Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, September 15th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Venture's gravesite in First Church Cemetery on Town Street (Route 151) in East Haddam. All are welcome.
The program will include a proclamation, speakers, a presentation by the 6th grade Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School students, entertaiment by Nzinga's Daughters, a reunion of the descendants of Ventures Smith, and refreshments. In case of inclement weather, the celebration will move into the parish Hall of the First Church of Christ, Congregational next to the cemetery.
For those who are not familiar with East Haddam's most famous slave/freeman, "google" Venture Smith (1729-1805) on the internet and read the narrative of his life.
Venture Smith's Grave is one of the original sites on the Connecticut Freedom Trail. Celebrations at the various Freedom Trail sites are held throughout Connecticut in the month of September.
